100: The number of years the iconic Musso & Frank Grill has been wining and dining Hollywood royalty from Frank Sinatra to Marilyn Monroe. In 1919, Frank Toulet opened Frank’s Cafe. Two years later, Joseph Musso became Toulet’s partner, and the duo renamed the eatery The Musso & Frank Grill. The two sold the restaurant to Joseph Carissimi and John Mosso 92 years ago, and now, the historic landmark is owned and operated by the families of Mosso’s three granddaughters: John and Cathy Echeverria and their son Mark Echeverria (the restaurant’s current chief operating officer, chief financial officer and proprietor); Steve and Anne Jones; and Richard and Kristen Kohlmeyer. In all its years of operation, only three executive chefs have served at Musso & Frank, where steaks are cooked on an 85-year-old seasoned grill. The red leather booths and classic architecture have drawn the restaurant into countless films and TV shows, including Mad Menand Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. The first new construction since 1955 recently began on three brand-new private dining rooms, and this fall, a book about the restaurant will debut five days before a party to celebrate the occasion Sept. 27, the very date of the restaurant’s opening a century ago. As Mark Echeverria puts it, “2019 isn’t solely the culmination of our first hundred years—it’s the beginning of our second hundred years!”
